    Cooperative high-performance computing with FPGAs - matrix multiply case-study

    In high-performance computing, there is great opportunity for systems that use FPGAs to handle communication while also performing computation on data in transit in an ``altruistic'' manner--that is, using resources for computation that might otherwise be used for communication, and in a way that improves overall system performance and efficiency. We provide a specific definition of \textbf{Computing in the Network} that captures this opportunity. We then outline some overall requirements and guidelines for cooperative computing that include this ability, and make suggestions for specific computing capabilities to be added to the networking hardware in a system. We then explore some algorithms running on a network so equipped for a few specific computing tasks: dense matrix multiplication, sparse matrix transposition and sparse matrix multiplication. In the first instance we give limits of problem size and estimates of performance that should be attainable with present-day FPGA hardware

    Clinical Experience With Angiotensin II Receptor Antagonists

    This series of studies was designed to assess in normal volunteers the relationships between various doses (5, 10, 20, 40, 80, and 120 mg) of the orally active angiotensin II antagonist losartan (DuP 753, MK-954) and their inhibitory effect on the pressure response to a given bolus of angiotensin I or II. It was found that the maximal inhibitory effect was reached with a dose of 80 mg. The minimal dose necessary for maximal efficacy would therefore be expected to be between 40 and 80 mg. The effect lasted for more than 24 h and was related almost exclusively to the circulating levels of the active metabolite EXP3174. It remains to be demonstrated in hypertensive patients that the same dose relationship holds for the antihypertensive effect, but preliminary data already suggest that this is the case.     Evaluating clinical stop-smoking services globally:towards a minimum data set

    BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Behavioural and pharmacological support for smoking cessation improves the chances of success and represents a highly cost-effective way of preventing chronic disease and premature death. There is a large number of clinical stop-smoking services throughout the world. These could be connected into a global network to provide data to assess what treatment components are most effective, for what populations and in what settings. To enable this, a minimum data set (MDS) is required to standardize the data captured from smoking cessation services globally. METHODS: We describe some of the key steps involved in developing a global MDS for smoking cessation services and methodologies to be considered for their implementation, including approaches for reaching consensus on data items to include in a MDS and for its robust validation. We use informal approximations of these methods to produce an example global MDS for smoking cessation. Our aim with this is to stimulate further discussion around the development of a global MDS for smoking cessation services. RESULTS: Our example MDS comprises three sections. The first is a set of data items characterizing treatments offered by a service. The second is a small core set of data items describing clients' characteristics, engagement with the service and outcomes. The third is an extended set of client data items to be captured in addition to the core data items wherever resources permit. CONCLUSIONS: There would be benefit in establishing a minimum data set (MDS) to standardize data captured for smoking cessation services globally. Once implemented, a formal MDS could provide a basis for meaningful evaluations of different smoking cessation treatments in different populations in a variety of settings across many countries

    Impact of health warning labels communicating the risk of cancer on alcohol selection: An online experimental study

    Background and Aims: Evidence from tobacco research suggests that health warning labels (HWLs) depicting the adverse consequences of consumption change smoking behaviours, with image-and-text (also known as ‘pictorial’ or ‘graphic’) HWLs most effective. There is an absence of evidence concerning the potential impact of HWLs placed on alcohol products on selection of those products. This study aimed to obtain a preliminary assessment of the possible impact of (a) image-and-text (b) text-only and (c) image-only HWLs on selection of alcoholic versus non-alcoholic drinks. DesignA between-subjects randomised experiment with a 2 (image: present vs absent) x 2 (text: present vs absent) factorial design. SettingThe study was conducted on the online survey platform Qualtrics.Participants Participants (n=6024) were adults over the age of 18 who consumed beer or wine regularly (i.e., at least once a week), recruited through a market research agency. Interventions Participants were randomised to one of four groups varying in the HWL displayed on the packaging of alcoholic drinks: i. image-and-text HWL; ii. text-only HWL; iii. image-only HWL; iv. no HWL. HWLs depicted bowel cancer, breast cancer and liver cancer, which were each displayed twice across six alcoholic drinks. Each group viewed six alcoholic and six non-alcoholic drinks and selected one drink that they would like to consume. MeasurementsThe primary outcome was the proportion of participants selecting an alcoholic versus a non-alcoholic drink.FindingsAlcoholic drink selection was lower for all HWL types compared with no HWL (image-and-text: 56%; image-only: 49%; text-only: 61%; no HWL: 77%), with selection lowest for HWLs that included an image. Image-and-text HWLs reduced the odds of selecting an alcoholic drink compared with text-only HWLs (OR = 0.80, 95% CI = 0.69, 0.92), but increased the odds of selecting an alcoholic drink compared with image-only HWLs (OR = 1.34, 95% CI = 1.16, 1.55).ConclusionsHealth warning labels communicating the increased risk of cancers associated with alcohol consumption reduced selection of alcoholic versus non-alcoholic drinks in a hypothetical choice task in an online setting; labels displaying images had the largest effect.     Terrain-aided navigation for long-range AUVs in dynamic under-mapped environments

    Deploying long‐range autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) mid‐water column in the deep ocean is one of the most challenging applications for these submersibles. Without external support and speed over the ground measurements, dead‐reckoning (DR) navigation inevitably experiences an error proportional to the mission range and the speed of the water currents. In response to this problem, a computationally feasible and low‐power terrain‐aided navigation (TAN) system is developed. A Rao‐Blackwellized Particle Filter robust to estimation divergence is designed to estimate the vehicle's position and the speed of water currents. To evaluate performance, field data from multiday AUV deployments in the Southern Ocean are used. These form a unique test case for assessing the TAN performance under extremely challenging conditions. Despite the use of a small number of low‐power sensors and a Doppler velocity log to enable TAN, the algorithm limits the localisation error to within a few hundreds of metres, as opposed to a DR error of 40 km, given a 50 m resolution bathymetric map. To evaluate further the effectiveness of the system under a varying map quality, grids of 100, 200, and 400 m resolution are generated by subsampling the original 50 m resolution map. Despite the high complexity of the navigation problem, the filter exhibits robust and relatively accurate behaviour. Given the current aim of the oceanographic community to develop maps of similar resolution, the results of this study suggest that TAN can enable AUV operations of the order of months using global bathymetric models
